President’s Update

Posted on July 21, 2012

2012 has been a busy year for our association! In January, over 30 delegates from Oak Ridges-Markham travelled to Ottawa to take part in the Liberal Party convention. In February, our association organized an event which included a visit from the new president, Mike Crawley, who shared his vision for the future of the Liberal Party of Canada.

In March we carried out a strategic planning process which has focused our energies on welcoming and engaging new members, thanking current donors, increasing the size and stability of our fundraising base by growing the Victory Fund [include link], setting regular association meetings, building a stronger association by gathering members and supporters [link to summer social], and developing a multi-faceted communications strategy, including,

  • our new e-newsletter
  • a dynamic website
  • an active social media presence through twitter and facebook
  • an active telephone calling system.

2012 has been a year to grow our capacity as a well-functioning organization that can engage and represent our community.

So where are we now?

Jane Philpott, an active member of our association, shared a report following the convention in Ottawa. In it she said:

On the plenary stage at the convention, a slide was projected with the following quote from Sir Wilfrid Laurier: “I am a Liberal. I am one of these who think that everywhere, in human things, there are abuses to be reformed, new horizons to be opened up, and new forces to be developed.” Here in Oak Ridges-Markham, there is great eagerness to continue in the tradition of Laurier. I hope you’ll encourage friends and colleagues in the area to join us in this effort.

Seems that this call to encourage friends and colleagues to join has been heeded! Membership and Victory Fund participation have increased substantially. New supporters are signing up each day. We have developed stronger connections with young liberals who have participated in every aspect of our association’s activities from making calls to strategic planning. We have a dynamic board of directors and group of volunteers. We have one of the most active riding association phone teams in the country. In short, we are well positioned to build on the many strengths of the Liberal Party of Canada’s long history, to learn from our mistakes, and to grow in our abilities to listen and represent this riding.

There is much to be done going forward. The upcoming year will be significant for our party as we select a leader at the national level to implement a vision for the Liberal Party of Canada. But let us not put so much emphasis on the importance of high level leadership that we forget the value and importance of finding creative ways for each of us to engage our neighbours and friends in Oak Ridges-Markham.

Our association is open. We want you to get involved. Here some opportunities we would encourage you to consider:

  1. You are welcome and encouraged to join our association meetings which take place once a month.
  2. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities if you want to make a contribution.
  3. Join the Victory Fund! The foundation of success is stability, and your financial support can help provide it. Please visit www.victoryfund.ca for details.

Hope to see you at the Annual General Meeting and summer social gathering on August 12.

Sincerely,

Allan Reesor-McDowell

President, Oak Ridges-Markham Federal Liberal Association
