The Honourable Jane Philpott, M.P., P.C.
Member of Parliament, Markham-Stouffville
Federal Minister of Indigenous Services

Jane Philpott became a physician so she could help people enjoy healthy and meaningful lives. She entered politics to help build a healthier society. For Jane, a seat in the House of Commons was not a target, but a tool – a tool she could use to improve her community and her country.

Jane spent the first decade of her career as a doctor in Niger Republic, West Africa. In 1998, Jane and her family moved to Stouffville, Ontario, where she served for 17 years as a family physician. She took on the roles of Chief of Family Medicine at Markham Stouffville Hospital and Associate Professor in the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine. Jane led the opening of the Health for All Family Health Team and the Markham Family Medicine Teaching Unit. In 2012, she completed a Master of Public Health degree at the University of Toronto.

Jane’s work to promote global health includes founding Give a Day to World AIDS in 2004 to raise money for people affected by HIV. She also helped launch Ethiopia’s first training program in Family Medicine through the Toronto Addis Ababa Academic Collaboration.

As federal Minister of Health, she has worked with provinces and territories to support historic new investments in mental health and home care. She has worked with Cabinet colleagues to introduce legislation on transformative social issues including medical assistance in dying and the legalization of cannabis. Jane is driven by the conviction that the highest attainable standard of health is a fundamental right of every human being. To that end, she continues her work with many partners to address social inequities and work toward the goal of health for all.

Jane was elected as Member of Parliament for Markham-Stouffville on October 19, 2015, and was appointed as Minister of Health on November 4, 2015. On August 28, 2017 Prime Minister Trudeau appointed Jane as the country’s first Minister of Indigenous Services.
